Thoughts of Spring!

I can smell it... the snow is melting, the grass is emerging, and Spring is almost here! This year I am longing for Spring like never before. Being cooped up inside with a toddler all winter is so draining, not to mention the commuting hassles that snow can cause. I can't wait to see what our yard looks like when the lilacs, hydrangeas, and who-knows-what-else are blooming. I can't wait to start my first garden and to play and explore the outdoors with my family.

In preparation for Spring, I've had this drive to have a sparkling clean house that I've never felt before (probably because I've never owned a house in the Spring before!). I've been following the kitchen spring cleaning tips on The Nourishing Gourmet, which has given me some extra motivation. So far, I have cleaned out the fridge and freezer (ewww... I'm really bad about not throwing away old food!), cleaned out our food cupboards, and filed away all the papers that were hogging our counter space. Hooray!

I've also been inspired to begin a home organizing binder, thanks to Davy's Delights and Passionate Homemaking! I am usually horribly unorganized unless someone inspires me to have a "system" for organizing. I believe that God is a God of order, and that our lives are more pleasing to Him when they are in order (oh, and more pleasing to us, too!).

So far, my home organizer includes:
  • My weekly menu plan and grocery list
  • Fast food menus (I wish I could leave that one out...)
  • Upcoming bills, paid bills
  • Important receipts
  • List of house to-do's
  • Healthcare info
And I plan to add:
  • Addresses
  • Commonly needed phone #s
  • Gift ideas
  • Book list
I've also started a separate binder for recipes, since so many of my recipes come from the internet and are completely unorganized!

I had a good talk with a friend the other night, and we both agreed that all of the information on the internet makes it hard to know which "good thing" to focus on first. There are so many great Christian blogs out there, with so much good information. But it's easy to become overwhelmed with it all, and to start feeling that I'm not good enough. I'm trying to take baby steps in all of this, and to remember my ultimate priority is to do everything for the glory of God! May He be honored in even the most mundane tasks of motherhood. :)

  1. It sounds like you have a good start to the home management binder! I highly recommend it. I have already learned that the binder is only helpful when I actually use it; therefore, my dedication is still required.

I have the same problem with reading inspiring blogs and trying to decide which good things to use. I was a overambitious in starting couponing, meal planning, and the home management binder all at once, which resulted in failure. The home management binder is now at the top of the list. Thanks for the reminder that the goal is to glorify God, not be automatically good at everything.

  2. Thanks for the note, Davy! I've enjoyed reading your blog, and think it's funny that we've been having a lot of the same thoughts at similar times. :) I was thinking about writing about modesty in this post, too!

I've been reading the book Heaven (by Randy Alcorn, I think), and it's been reminding me that the longings we have now to be organized and make things beautiful, etc. are actually going to be Fulfilled for all of eternity - how incredible! :) God is good!
